~ RECOVERY THOUGHT OF THE DAY ~ (From Members of Various 12 Step Programs)

Hearing others share their experience gave real life examples of what they were going through. They shared how they found solutions through working the steps and pointed out excerpts in the Big Book that guided them to those solutions. And, finally the hope of staying sober one day at a time, the happy, peaceful and productive days I had to look forward to if I just didn't drink that day.

~ RECOVERY THOUGHT OF THE DAY ~ (From Members of Various 12 Step Programs)

My sponsor and I are not close friends. We do nothing together but 12 step meetings and 12 step work. We are almost completely opposite. We do not travel in the same circles. We are of very different ages and backgrounds. The only things we have in common are the 12 steps, we are both women, and we live in the same town. I am starting to like her as I get to know her better, but the only thing I knew about her when I asked her to help me is that she had something I wanted.

A.A. Thought for the Day

"When we saw our faults, we listed them. We placed them before us in black and white. We admitted our wrongs honestly and we were willing to set these matters straight. We reviewed our fears thoroughly. We asked God to remove our fears and we commenced to outgrow fear. Many of us needed an overhauling in regard to sex. We came to believe that sex powers were God given and therefore good, if used properly. Sex is never to be used lightly or selfishly, nor is it to be despised or loathed. If sex is troublesome, we throw ourselves the harder into helping others, and so take our minds off ourselves." Am I facing my sex problems in the proper way?

Meditation for the Day

Cling to the belief that all things are possible with God. If this belief is truly accepted, it is the ladder upon which a human soul can climb from the lowest pit of despair to the sublimest heights of peace of mind. It is possible for God to change your way of living. When you see the change in another person through the grace of God, you cannot doubt that all things are possible in the lives of people through the strength that comes from faith in Him who rules us all.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may live expectantly. I pray that I may believe deeply that all things are possible with God.

A.A. Thought for the Day

“We must continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We should grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter; it should continue for our lifetime. Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We must not rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve, contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.” Am I checking my spiritual condition daily?

Meditation for the Day

Happiness cannot be sought directly; it is a by-product of love and service. Service is a law of our being. With love in your heart, there is always some service to other people. A life of power and joy and satisfaction is built on love and service. Persons who hate or are selfish are going against the law of their own being. They are cutting themselves off from God and other people. Little acts of love and encouragement, of service and help, erase the rough places of life and help to make a path smooth. If we do these things, we cannot help having our share of happiness.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may give my share of love and service. I pray that I may not grow weary in my attempts to do the right thing.

Another of the mottoes of A.A. is "Live and Let Live." This, of course, means tolerance of people who think differently than we do, whether they are in A.A. or outside of A.A. We cannot afford the luxury of being intolerant or critical of other people. We do not try to impose our wills on those who differ from us. We are not "holier than thou." We do not have all the answers. We are not better than other good people. We live the best way we can and we allow others to do likewise. Am I willing to live and let live?

Meditation for the Day

"And this is life eternal, that we may know Thee, the only true God." Learning to know God as best you can draws the eternal life nearer to you. Freed from some of the limitations of humanity, you can grow in the things that are eternal. You can strive for what is real and of eternal value. The more you try to live in the consciousness of the unseen world, the gentler will be your passing into it when the time comes for you to go. This life on earth should be largely a preparation for the eternal life to come.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may live each day as though it were my last. I pray that I may live my life as though it were everlasting.

We all wish we could go back and change the past, especially when we are having difficulty dealing with the present. Let the past go and deal effectively with today. Every day we are given the gift of a brand new day in which to do things differently. Focus on now and see what you can do about that.

I could accept the idea that I was an alcoholic, but I could not accept the idea that anything else in my life needed changing, besides my drinking. Since I returned to AA, after a relapse that left me in a state of utter desperation, my mind opened up and I realized that the people who were living the steps were living a whole lot better and happier than I was.

It's suggested that a newcomer attend 90 meetings in 90 days. For me, that was neccessary because it took at least three months before I could comprehend anything.

The most important thing for me is that I work my program and let him work his. I don’t keep track of his attendance at meetings or anything, and if he needs to go to a meeting and I need to watch our child, then I get on the the online meetings or do some reading.

My alcoholism is the best thing that ever happened to me, by far I've met the finest people I know. It doesn't matter where you are, who you are, there are people out there who know you and can relate to you, and have been there themselves.

It doesn't matter if the other person is in the program or not as long as they are moving in a healthy direction and feel comfortable with who they are. If your looking to be saved from loneliness through a relationship then check your motives for entering into the relationship.

At this point, my sponsor is more of a sounding board than a guide for me. He knows me very well, and is familiar with my thinking patterns. Sometimes he can see a fallacy in my thinking that I am not seeing. Of course, I have a much more extended support system now than I did in the beginning.

Then Al-Anon members shared their stories with me and I realized I'm not a bad wife for leaving him to his own devices. He always managed somehow to get home -- sometimes with new stitches on his body, sometimes in perfect, albeit hungover, shape.

I remember asking my sponsor one day, am I going to have to try everything I can think of to get what I want before I finally accept this step? Am I going to have to get on the ground, kick and scream, and yell I can't do this anymore? He smiled, a bit sarcastically I thought, and replied, "Maybe, but would you rather get hit over the head with a hammer or a feather?"

I also get involved in service, that's been a lifesaver for me, as there have been times when my resolve to continue with AA has tended to wane, but because I committed myself to service I kept on plodding along.

We can learn coping skills to help us understand addiction and how not to get caught up in it. We learn how to love someone in a healthier way; not shielding them from the consequences of their actions.

We learn to set boundaries surrounding what is and is not acceptable behaviours of others. Mostly, we learn to feel okay about who we are. No one can force anyone to do anything. People have to want to get better.

I find it necessary to go out and hit meetings and deal with people. We found the time to get to the liquor store or the corner market for our beer didnt we? We can find the time necessary to attend a meeting.

I know my husband is hitting rock bottom. I believe it's because I left him to his own behaviour. Because I'm not pecking at him anymore for drinking, he's left with the guilt of it all. When I do peck at him, he always has a good reason to drink. Al-Anon is the only reason I am still with him.

For me, a sponsor was, and is, a good thing. I was lucky enough to get a good sponsor with the first one I picked. The key word, of course, is "good." Sometimes you need to try out a few before you find a good one.
