Success rates
Success Rates: AA is not for everyone. AA is a spiritual solution for those who want it. Not the millions forced into it by courts, rehabs and families. Some people throw out low (5-10%) AA success rates. Numbers often corrupted by these court ordered and rehab forced visitors. These are mostly people attending for education not sobriety. AA offers a spiritual solution. Visitors are not to be counted until they work the steps and start helping others. Otherwise the science is based on flawed understanding. It works if you work it. Promise. It doesn't work if you don't work.
Original AA methods realized a 72% success rate (died sober!) from 1934-1938. Clarence S. in Cleveland recorded a 93% success rate and the Tablemate four week beginners meetings are said to have 90% after one year. These methods are still alive and well today. This following snippet from the 1940 Akron Manual, conveys very well where AA's roots and strength lie.

TO THE NEWCOMER: It is your life. It is your choice. If you are not completely convinced to your own satisfaction that you are an alcoholic, that your life has become unmanageable; if you are not ready to part with alcohol forever, it would be better for all concerned if you discontinue reading this and give up the idea of becoming a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
For if you are not convinced, it is not only wasting your own time, but the time of scores of men and women who are genuinely interested in helping you. -The Akron Manual, 1940
