Rough surf and rip currents over the past five days have kept rescue workers busy along local beaches.

Since Wednesday, three people have drowned. Countless others have been pulled to safety by first responders after venturing into the water despite warnings about the hazardous surf conditions.

In all, first responders in the two counties performed about 45 water rescues in five days.

The first drowning occurred Wednesday when 45-year-old Scott Carter was pulled from the waters after getting caught in a rip current near Surfside condominiums in Miramar Beach.

The Atlanta man was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. He died early Monday morning.

On Sunday around 5:40 p.m. two men drowned in waters behind an area of South Spooky Lane in Santa Rosa Beach.

Memphis, Tenn., resident Annazar Nazarov, 44, got caught in a rip current and another beachgoer went into the water in an attempt to rescue him. Once in the water, 48-year-old William Haithcox of Spartanburg, S.C., also got caught in the rough waters.

Both were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast where they were pronounced dead.

A fourth man died Saturday in South Walton after having a medical emergency while in the water. Emergency officials said the man suffered a heart attack but it’s unclear if the rough surf caused his distress.
